Country details

The table gives contact details, but local services vary in scope. Use the official service name when searching or calling from outside the country.

United Kingdom and Ireland

GambleAware lists the UK National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 and says it is available 24/7. GamblingCare.ie lists Ireland's National Helpline for problem gambling support on 1800 936 725. If you are unsure which service fits, start with the country where you live.

United States

The National Council on Problem Gambling lists 1-800-MY-RESET as the National Problem Gambling Helpline. Where chat, text or hours are not shown in the table, use the phone number first and check the service's own page for current options.

Canada

ConnexOntario provides 24/7 phone access for gambling treatment service information in Ontario on 1-866-531-2600. The contact in this table is province-specific, so people outside Ontario should use the relevant provincial service if one is available locally. If the concern is urgent, use local emergency or crisis support rather than waiting for a gambling-service response.

Australia and New Zealand

Gambling Help Online lists Australia's 24/7 gambling helpline on 1800 858 858. The New Zealand Department of Internal Affairs lists the Gambling Helpline on 0800 654 655.

Europe

European services in the table include telephone counselling, public information lines and treatment-centre contacts. Spillemyndigheden lists Denmark's StopSpillet, gesund.bund.de lists Germany's BZgA telephone counselling line, and the Responsible Gaming Foundation operates Malta's National Gambling Helpline. Service scope differs by country, so use the exact country row rather than assuming that one European number covers every caller.

Slovakia and Czechia

The Gambling Regulatory Authority of the Slovak Republic lists Slovakia's national gambling helpline on 0800 131 000. Hazardní hraní / Národní linka pro odvykání hraní lists Czechia's National Line for Quitting Gambling on 800 350 000.

International and online options

Gambling Therapy describes itself as a global service for people affected by gambling. It lists support@gamblingtherapy.org for support contact, offers live text-based support and states that support can be provided in any language using automatic translation. That makes it a practical starting point when your country has no phone row, or when calling a local number is not possible.

Online help is not all the same. Prefer services run by recognised charities, treatment providers or public bodies. Peer discussion can reduce isolation, but it should not replace professional or local support, especially if money, debt, housing or family safety is involved. If a chat service cannot answer immediately, use the most relevant phone contact in the country table.

What to expect when you contact a helpline

A first contact is usually about getting support and finding the next practical step, not proving that you meet clinical criteria. If you are trying to understand your own behaviour before calling, read about signs of a gambling problem, but do not wait for a diagnosis before asking for help.

  • Anonymous contact: use an anonymous first name only if the service itself says that is allowed.
  • No diagnosis needed: you can call or message to talk about worries, urges, debt pressure or someone else's gambling.
  • You choose what to share: you can explain the situation in your own words and stop if a question feels too much.
  • Questions about gambling and money: the adviser may ask what you play, how often, and whether gambling is affecting bills or borrowing.
  • Local treatment and tools: the adviser can point you towards counselling, treatment services, self-exclusion or limit-setting options available in your area.

Do not assume absolute confidentiality or emergency coverage. Ask the adviser how the service handles privacy, safety concerns and referrals before sharing details you are unsure about.

Support for family and friends

Gambling problems can affect partners, parents, adult children, housemates and friends. Gambling Therapy says it supports people affected by gambling, not only the person who gambles. If you are trying to help someone else, keep the focus on safety, money boundaries and support rather than blame. For practical steps, read our guide to helping a family member or friend with a gambling problem.

Where to get help

If you want to stop or cut down, compare treatment and support options in how to stop gambling. If access to betting accounts is part of the issue, read about self-exclusion programmes and how they work.

Frequently asked questions

Are gambling helplines free?

Some services explicitly describe their phone line or counselling contact as free, including Loket Kansspel, Loteria Română's Joc Responsabil and Igraj Odgovorno. Do not assume that every number is free from every phone plan, especially if you are calling from another country.

Can I contact a helpline by chat instead of phone?

Yes, where the service offers it. Gambling Therapy says it offers live text-based support internationally.

Can family members call a gambling helpline?

Yes. Gambling Therapy describes its service as support for people affected by gambling, which can include people affected by someone else's gambling. A family member can ask about boundaries, money safety and local support options.

Is a gambling helpline available 24/7?

Some are. GambleAware lists the UK National Gambling Helpline as 24/7, ConnexOntario lists 24/7 phone access in Ontario, and Gambling Help Online lists Australia's helpline as 24/7. If the table shows an en dash for hours, check the service before relying on overnight availability.
